Reaction Design Enables Prediction of Combustor Lean Blow Off

Combustion simulation software allows advanced simulation for gas turbines and burners

San Diego, Calif. – May 21, 2013 Reaction Design®, the leading developer of combustion simulation software, has introduced predictive capabilities that enable the accurate modeling of Lean Blow Off (LBO) in ENERGICO, a sophisticated modeling tool that works in conjunction with available Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes used to simulate combustors in gas turbines and boilers. LBO is often a critical limiting factor in the realization of reductions in pollutant emissions such as NOx. With ENERGICO, combustion engineers can design combustors that are more resistant to LBO. In addition, this capability can be especially significant for turbines used in combined-cycle power plants seeking to operate at lower loads to avoid costly nightly shut-downs, as a turbine’s LBO tendency often defines a plant’s low load limits.

Using an advanced combustion simulation package like ENERGICO, designers can leverage existing CFD data to initiate a simulation and evaluate how close a flame is to LBO. The speed and accuracy of this approach makes it easier for combustor designers to evaluate LBO behavior for different designs and operating conditions. ENERGICO offers the ability to:

  • Capture the flame in the CFD geometry;
  • Conduct a detailed chemistry analysis locally in the flame;
  • Determine the mixing rate from CFD;
  • Determine the flame’s proximity to LBO; and
  • Visualize the flame within the geometry to guide design modifications.
